Scanner Driver Downloads
This technical note includes some basic FAQs on an FTP server, common download problems and related issues.

Download keeps timing out
Download is very slow (less than half the modem speed)
A web page appears instead of a download
Server cannot be found
Server says 'Username or Password Incorrect / Not Recognised'
Cannot browse directories with FTP client

All of the current drivers are available for download from our European servers (please link to these via the image above).
The most popular download is the latest driver for the Astra scanners, which is a huge 25+MB file (or available in smaller sections); we typically serve 22,000 files per week. Download times depend on the speed of your Internet connection:

28.8 modem (3.6k/sec) 118 minutes
33.6 modem (4.2k/sec) 102 minutes
56k modem (7k/sec) 61 minutes
64k ISDN (8k/sec) 53 minutes
128k ISDN (16k/sec) 26 minutes
200k/sec 2 minutes

Our FTP servers have the following features/constraints, designed to offer the best possible service to UK visitors with high-speed connections:

1. We will allow any one user to connect to the servers up to 4 times (sessions) simultaneously (based on their internet address). If the server is under heavly load we will reduce the number of simultaneous connections an IP address can make.
2. Each session can download files at any speed up to a limit of 200k/sec, depending on their own connection speed.
3. Our server will allow up to 650 anonymous sessions at any one time, although this will also be varied to guarantee good service to users already connected, if the bandwidth is being heavily used.
4. If our server is very busy, UK visitors are given priority; priority is also given to users with fast (>4.2k/sec) connections. Sessions trying to download very large drivers at very low speeds (typically <3K/sec) will be dropped in favour of users with fast connections.

> Solving common download problems:

- Download keeps timing out

This is usually a problem with the user's Internet Service Provider (ISP) or their setup - some ISPs will slow down downloads after a certain time, to stop their users from saturating their network (AOL are known to do this after 1 hour, and their software may time-out after only 10 minutes). Try downloading the file in sections (disk by disk). If a user's download is very unstable (eg the speed keeps changing and it regularly drops below 1k/sec) our servers will disconnect them.

- Download is very slow (less than half the modem speed)

Unless the servers are extremely busy this is a problem with the user's setup or ISP - remember, we serve each session at up to 200k/second! Try downloading the driver in smaller sections. FTP client software will often be quicker than web browsers - most FTP programs will also allow a user to RESUME (rather than restart) a download if it is interrupted (our server is the only UMAX download site that does support 'resume').

- A web page appears instead of a download

This is a common problem when using web browsers (Netscape or IE) to download files - it often happens after several other files have already been downloaded and is caused by the browser's caching. The solutions are:

1. Try right-clicking on the download link and choose "Save As..."

2. Right-click on the download link and Copy the shortcut - then paste the address in to the 'Location' field in Netscape or Internet Explore. Make the following change to the location: either a. replace "ftp.umax.co.uk" with "ftp.imcnet.com" or b. delete the filename from the end of the address and just visit the FTP directory (in the directory listing right-click on the file you need and choose "Save As...".

3. Clear the Memory Cache / Disk Cache (Netscape) or delete Temporary Internet Files (IE).

- Server cannot be found

Unless the servers have actually failed (they haven't yet, there is a redundant cluster and any major problems will be notified on the download pages), this is usually caused by an ISP problem or the users' configuration.

- Cannot browse directories with FTP client
If you are having problems navigating the site using a traditional FTP client please configure it for a passive (PASV) connection. We do not use text files to describe directory contents and rely on visitors making the correct selections via the web pages - there are no reported problems with downloads using any mainstream browsers.
